Clear Lake

October 13, 2001

In an era when the bodies of Egyptian royalty were being wrapped and preserved for posterity, the Little Nash Crater erupted in the Cascades, causing a huge lava flow to roll down the mountain onto a forest of tall evergreens, whose remains, like those of the mummified Pharaohs, have been preserved until the present time. Our hiking group missed the event by roughly three thousand years, but stood atop the tumultuous cascade of brackish rubble and boulders - a great swath of volcanic material now solidified where it had tumbled into the McKenzie River, damming the waters and forming a body of water so aptly named that we could see clearly the treetops of those giant phantoms from another millennium. This first-time leader's "opening-night jitters" were quickly dispelled by the warm congeniality of the nine-member group. The sun was shining through clouds, and we were blessed with invigorating October air. Not quite in full-blown autumn colors, the greenery was pock-marked with lustrous bursts of red, orange an gold. We passed a beautiful cluster of burgundy-barked Pacific yews. We picnicked at the Great Spring, where we were visited by a few yellow jacks, an insect species well researched by Sabine, who cautioned us that if we smacked one of the little buggers, the resulting scent would bring in a swarm, like cavalry to the rescue. Forewarned was forearmed! Or disarmed? A grand highlight of our tour was an encounter with a group that appeared to be from the U. of O. music department, wit several recognizable Obsidians in their midst. One of their members burst into a hearty rendition of "I Love to go A-Wandering", gesturing us to join in, and we filled the air with our lusty choruses. Thanks to veteran Obsidian Margee for doing the sweep honors and sharing valuable past experiences with this novice leader. Thanks also to my fiancé, Jim Wood, for collaboration with the report. The full roster of jovial, supportive hikers consisted of Jean Butler, Sabine du Toit, Eldon Haines, Sandra Larsen, Jim & Lesley Mooney, Jim Wood, Margee Wright and Teresita Ladd, leader.
