Castle Rock

October 9, 2001

This trip used the O'Leary Road approach to Castle Rock which provides a sweeping view of the McKenzie Valley and the Three Sisters. Both the access road and the trail were in excellent condition. This is a 3.5-mile hike with an elevation gain of 1240 ft. After a long, dry period and a short rainy period the trail was again damp and the woods were looking fresh. A break in the weather permitted a breath-taking view of the freshly snow covered Sisters against a blue sky with fog at their base. At our leisurely lunch in the sun we were served yummy oatmeal, raisin, chocolate chip cookies made by Wayne. This was a perfect Indian Summer day short hike by Larry Bellinger, Wayne Deeter, Catherine Jones, Barbara Sutherland and leader Margaret Wiese.
