Scott Mountain (via Hand Lake)

September 29, 2001

It was warm and the sky was incredibly clear. We began hiking from Hwy. 242 and walked through the dry meadow at Hand Lake. The old shelter still appears to be in good condition. There were eight of us, all strong hikers; there were no stragglers and we made good time as we bushwhacked up the north side of Scott Mtn. At a small, unnamed lake above the cliff we made the usual stop to enjoy the views to the north and east over the lava beds. There were scattered Fall colors. I went swimming and barely avoided hypothermia! We enjoyed the view while having lunch at the summit of Scott Mtn. Surprisingly, frost persisted in the shade. Enjoying this exceptionally fine autumn day were Max Brown, Allan Coons, Benton Elliot, Peter Graham, Bob Huntley, Norma Lockyear, Steve Schriver and Dave Predeek (leader).
