Little Brother

September 21, 2001

Four hikers (Jim Fritz, Jon Tressler, Brian Hoyland and Doug Quirk, leader) met early at the SEHS parking lot on the last full day of summer. Our destination was Little Brother, a volcano that erupted long ago and that sits on the western rim of Collier Glacier moraine, across from the North Sister. We had a beautiful day for our trip and were a well-matched group, stamina-wise (Jon had run the McKenzie River Trail Run - 50K, or about 31 miles - less than a week earlier). Our journey up Obsidian Trail to Glacier Way Trail and then to Sunshine Meadow and the climbers' trail that heads toward Arrowhead Lake, went quite smoothly. We started traveling cross-country somewhere below Arrowhead, and while the going was a little slower, this too went smoothly and we were basking in the sunshine on the summit before long. We elected to take a different way down (via the crater), which had its plusses (beautiful meadowy areas) and minuses (footwear filled with rocks, sand, etc.). We relaxed briefly in Sunshine Meadow before making our way back to the trailhead and then on to Eugene. All in all, a very well-spent final full day of summer!
