Tidbits Mountain

August 4, 2001

Overcast as gathered at SEHS parking lot. Check-in and pre trip quickly and off at 8:30 a.m. Up to C.G. at Blue River Reservoir - which empty! Restroom break and then 10-plus miles of slow winding road to trailhead. Green waters up and off we go with Buzz and his five-year-old son Andrew as sweep; Andrew had a great day and lots of energy! Arrived at saddle/trail intersection in an hour - quick hikers. Overcast and wet on the trial. Max led the way in spotting and eating huckleberries. Few birds, couple ground squirrels and one salamander on trail. Leader is flower i.d. challenged but several Obsidian regulars helped with names. Onward and upward. Twice had to scramble over big trees down on trail and soon on shoulder of mountain. Because of size of group, kept to right-hand trail and wound up to summit. On way, we crossed two big rock slide areas, saw blue gentian and Cascade lilies - quite a sight. Also Indian paintbrush and lots small yellow and white flowers - all nice on a cool overcast day. Shoulder of summit at 12:15. About eight on top and lunched on old lookout concrete pad. Rest just below. Sun tried to come out, but did not make it. After lunch, rest and stretch, group ready to go, so retraced steps down to saddle, rest and then down to cars. Great group chemistry and great group. All enjoyed the day. Back to SEHS lot about 4:00 p.m. Hikers were Nancy Sharrard, Max Brown, Yuan Hopkins, Sharon Thomas, Lilly Serrano, Buzz & Andrew Blumm, Joe Scheibe, Ron Vincent, Peter Rodda, Vincent Scarpaci, Mavis Mate, Marlene Herinckx, Deb & Terry Mason, Ginnie Busey, Carol Brackman and Mark Perrin, leader.
