Black Crater

July 22, 2001

Three non-members met the leader at the SEHS parking lot under sunny skies. We were on the trail by about 10:15 after a short stop at the Dee Wright Observatory. This was the first time to Black Crater for two of the hikers. The trail was in excellent condition and since we had blue skies we had excellent views of the Sisters, Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Washington and Black Butte. We saw pestemon, paintbrush, lupine and cats' ears. I wasn't able to provide the surprise that three of us saw earlier when I scouted the trip. As we drove towards the Dee Wright Observatory we saw a man leading a camel! Yes, a camel! Fellow Obsidian Birgitte Williams was a witness to that event. A good day in Oregon's Cascades was had by Chris Christensen, Gunni Cherrytree, Bella Shaver and leader Sandra Larsen.
