Siltcoos Canal TrailMay 20, 2001Met at the Westlake Boat Landing (six miles south of Florence). Twelve people/six canoes/one inflatable kayak. Put in 11:00 am. Inflatable kayak very mappropriate for "frog water", much too slow/affected by wind. Combined into six canoes. Very easy portage over dam. Saw bald eagle, crows, swallows, ducks, blue heron. Frequent maneuvering around snags, no problems. Passed Sunny Plover protected area. High winds at beach. Returned to a picnic area for lunch. Returned to ramp by 3:30. Ladies in inflatable felt they should have been warned about the inappropriateness of the inflatable for this trip. They're right! My mistake. I thought it went well. Canoers were Jim Whitfield, Chris Stockdale, Bob Huntley, Marian West, Mike Geil, David Roderick, Nola Woodbury, Susan Clark, Fred Weley, Helen Liguori, Barbara Schomaker and Ron Bruton (leader). |
