Cummins Creek TrailMarch 11, 2001This trip was to have been co-led by Lana Lindstrom (Eugene connection) and Mary Holbert (the actual leader), but unfortunately, Mary contracted some “hoof” disease and was unable to wear shoes for a few days. So Jan True (Obsidian’s Corvallis connection) graciously agreed to meet us there and lead the hike. Five of us crammed into the leader’s Subaru Outback on this cloudy, chilly day. On the way over, just west of Noti, we saw a herd of elk on the south side of Hwy. 126 - what a treat! True to arrangements made by e-mail and phone answering machines, Jan and her friend Russ met us at MP 168 on Hwy. 101 near Cape Perpetua. Shortly after setting out, we spotted the first trillium of the season — another special moment! We later saw a few more, as well as current trees in bloom. This nine-mile trail was amazingly dry with several different ecosystems. There are several options to make the trip either longer or shorter. On the way home, in order to rotate seat positions, the Subaru occupants stopped at BJ's ice cream and sampled five different flavors. Enjoying this very pleasant late winter hike were Barbara Bruns, Peter Graham, Russ Roberts, Jeff Wilcox, Mel Zavodsky, and co-leaders Jan True and Lana Lindstrom. |
