Polk County Museum/A.C. Gilbert Village

May 30, 2001

Departing promptly at 8:00 a.m., north on I-5, west on Hwy. 34 to Sarah Helmick S.P. for our coffee-cookie break. Ethel Allen and her hospitality crew provided us with gourmet goodies. Continuing on Hwy. 99-W to the newly opened Polk County Museum in Rickreall, located next to the Fairgrounds. Displays about native Americans, early day settlers, history, prominent people, agriculture, the economy, WWII and Camp Adair, logging, the Applegate Trail and other subjects are well presented by a cordial and dedicated staff. The layout is similar to the local REI with interior stairway and upstairs loft for more displays. Next over some backroads through scenic farmlands to the Falls of the Little Luckiamute, surprisingly in full flow. We lunched at the lovely Dallas City Park; at leisure on a mild, cloudy, windless day. Their small arboretum has been improved, the result of many hours of voluntary work. On to the Baskett Slough Wildlife Refuge; from the viewing platform we saw one bald eagle and a few migrating geese. The attendant informed us that on the previous day 16,000 geese were counted. So - we missed the Big Show! On to the A.C. Gilbert Discovery Village in Salem. Mr. Gilbert's old home, his many inventions (the erector set, etc.) are nicely displayed in the National Toy Hall of Fame and with fun apparatus and games both inside and outside. But with a bizillion energetic kids (school vacation), this horde rather overwhelmed us. We now know the meaning of Perpetual Motion. We retreated to teh beautiful campus of Willamette University to enjoy the peace and quiet of the campus grounds. Many of us dozed during the boring 67 miles on I-5 from Salem to Eugene after a full day. Gary Tolle of Oregon Coachways did his usual excellent job of returning us home at 5:15 p.m.

Riders were: Ethel Allen, Mabel Armstrong, Sally Bethel, Marian Borchardt, Mary Bridgeman, Jerry Brindle, Ingrid Carmichael, Mary Lee Cheadle, Nicole Chase, Florence Douglas, Fay Eoff, Bette Hack, Dora Harris, Ben & Pat Jeffries, Jean Jensen, Rosella Jones, Ben Kirk, Helen Knowlton, Gloria Layden, Mary Lemons, Dodie Leppmann, Mary Ellen MacArthur, John & Lenore McManigal, Joyce Mixer, Frances Newsom, Joyce Norman, Bobbie Sorrels, Janet & Dick Speelman and trip leaders Ray Jensen & Liz Reanier.
