Three Fingered Jack Area

March 12, 2000

We started this ski from the Santiam SnoPark near the entrance to Hoodoo by following the old Skyline Trail north to its intersection with the cutoff trail from the rock pit on the PCNST. From that point it is less than a mile to the Cascade crest, skiing off trail through really nice country, with open corridors and slopes. We proceeded at true bearing 20 degrees up the hill behind the intersection; then after a quarter mile or so, turned to the Tight (35 degrees) until getting near a steep slope up to a buttress in our path. We went up the valley to the right of the buttress until we found open slopes leading to the col just NE of point 5722 shown on the Three Fingered Jack 7.5 minute quadrangle. There we had some lunch and Gordon telemarked down the slopes to the north in exquisite powder. A short climb brought us to the Crest and the PCNST. We had time so went north to the open slopes on the west side of Jack, then returned the same way. By the time we returned the sun had punished the slopes, but we still managed to have some fun downhill skiing. Enjoying this quick way to the Crest and beyond were Dick Hildreth, Gordon Sayre, Sue Sullivan and John Mowat (leader).
