Siltcoos Lake & Oregon Dunes

March 5, 2000

This winter walk explored a trail new to the leader — the route through the woods to Siltcoos Lake. Siltcoos Lake turned out to be quite large, unoccupied except by ducks, and a very peaceful lunch spot. Good weather gladdened our hearts. Back at the cars, we drove south another three miles and took a trail through the dunes to the beach. Unfortunately, our trail was flooded out in the Deflation Plain. A couple of other hikers in front of us turned around in defeat and warned us that we wouldn’t get through. Ah, but we are Obsidians and not easily discouraged. Helping each other, we got through five or six big puddles. We lost two hikers after the third puddle; they elected to wait for us. The remaining six explorers continued on. We lost two more before the last big water obstacle. Four of our party made it to the beach. We all made it back and even enjoyed the drive home on this almost Spring day. Hiking at the coast were Yuan Hopkins, Lesley Marcus, Sig Otto, Barbara Schomaker, Nicole Smith, Michelle Tambellini, Nola Shurtleff, and Susan Baker, leader.
