The weather could not have been better for this February snowshoe hike to the summit of Cone Peak.
We car-pooled to Tombstone Pass SnoPark, and hiked down the highway to the summertime trailhead for
Cone Peak and Iron Mountain.
We were able to follow the summer hiking trail for the first three-quarters of a mile, then followed
an easy cross-country route up through old growth trees to the summit meadows.
A relaxing lunch in the sun refueled the group for the final climb to the summit.
From the summit we could see as far north as Mount Adams in Washington State and as far south as
Diamond Peak, and all the Cascade peaks in between.
We had some trouble following the trail back down through the trees, and traveled down steep slopes
on a cross-country route, until we crossed our tracks down near the highway.
Joining me for a wonderful day in the mountains were guests Pat Adams, Leslie Hoffman,
Victor Nickerson, Brian Patch, Ellen Syverson, Ethel Weltman
and Obsidians Carol Armstrong, Peter Graham, Van Likes, Royal Murdock and leader Brian Hoyland.
