Iron Mountain/Cone Peak
July 9, 2000
What a perfect day! We had sunshine, cool breezes, cloud cover while
going up Iron Mountain. At a last-minute suggestion from Susan, we reversed
the usual hike, going up Iron Mountain from the lower parking lot first.
Had lunch at the top, then went on around to Cone Peak. The benefits:
Gaining the Iron Mountain elevation in the cool of the morning while not
tired from a longer hike, lunch at the top with only a few non-Obsidians
rather than the usual “standing room only” feeling, passing everyone coming
from Cone Peak who would then get to climb in the warm sun and stand elbow
to elbow at the top! Turned out great; plan to do the same next year.
Do the names Steve Johnson and Jerry Hendrickson sound familiar to any
old-timers? They were once young Eagle Scouts in Frank Moore’s troop.
Steve told about their many wonderful adventures. Steve is going to reinstate
his membership and his wife, Ellen, is working on hers. The flowers on
Iron Mountain were the best I have ever seen, Cone Peak, though beautiful,
was not as spectacular as in the past. Many thanks to Heiner for being sweep,
to Lana and Steve for helping with the driving, and to everyone for helping
to make this a wonderful day. Obsidians were Susan Baker, Don Doerr,
Bob Huntley, Helen Liguori, Lana Lindstrom, Norma Lockyear, Lucile Peterson,
Barbara Schomaker and Heiner Wagener. Non-members were Mary Ellen Burnett,
John Heasley, Jerry Hendrickson and Ellen & Steve Johnson.
Leader (of sorts): Sharon Ritchie.
