July 1, 2000
Eleven hikers joined to do the Cone Peak trail early on a beautiful July morning.
We had just come through a heat wave, so it was a welcome break to have a perfectly
cool day. Since this hike is well known, and has been so thoroughly described
(see Trip Report, July 12, 1999, or John Cooney’s “Natural World”
on KLCC, July 6, 2000), I will not dwell on details.
We were very happy to see that the Forest Service had cut away the many windfalls
that were present a week earlier, and had to be scrambled over.
We did not go to the top of Cone Peak due to the fragile nature of the
ecosystem there. We had lunch among the luxurious floral meadows on the
south benches of Cone Peak. Making the trip were non-members Don Doerr,
Mary Roberts and Lisa Mattiello and Obsidians Wendy Dame, Michelle Tambellini,
Maggie Gontrum, Yuan Hopkins, Max Brown, Sheila Ward, Becky Hansen and Herm Fitz (leader).
