Weyerhaeuser RoadApril 5, 2000This was another trip from suburban Springfield to rural Jasper area on Weyerhaeuser’s logging road. The weather was a pleasant surprise — cool and sunny. Participants obliged by driving to our main starting point, the LTD parking lot at 57th & Main in Springfield. [Thank you, friends, for helping your leader by meeting there.] We started at the civilized hour of 10:00 a.m. and walked the seven-plus miles to Hills Creek Road, ending at Velma and Mike’s house for coffee and cookies. Though far from forest or wilderness, our asphalt road had its charms. The air was fresh, cottonwood trees wafted their spring fragrance, trees, bushes, flowers bloomed, and birds contributed their songs and their aeronautical maneuvers for our enjoyment. Fortunately, the number of passengers exactly equaled the number of seat belts available in the Shirk vehicles, so the shuttle back to Springfield was easily made by mid-afternoon, ending a pleasant walk for Leona Devine, Bep Fontana, Marjory Kelm, Helen Liguori, Dixie Minkler, Lois Morse, Virginia Prouty, Ardys Ringsdorf and trip leader Velma Shirk. |
