Fuji ShelterFebruary 27, 1999Dave Becker, Mike Landes, Karen Rayle and leader Gerry Roe left the Sale Creek Falls parking lot under a cloudy sky to cross Hwy. 58. We began the trek on snowshoes up the road to Fuji Shelter. We encountered a smattering of rain as we trudged through the deep and wet snow, taking turns to break trail. As we gained elevation we had a picturesque view of Diamond Peak, Mount Yoran and an Amtrak train traveling east. It was a long, hard climb to the shelter … only to find it almost completely snowed under! Our time had been just under three hours to this point. We slipped through a small opening to find dry wood and paper for a small fire. All of us enjoyed our lunch, visiting and listening to the howling wind and now a heavy rain. Our trip down was rapid as the wind and rain continued without relief. None of us were unhappy to see Hwy. 58 again, but all agreed it had been a good trip in spite of inclement weather. Thanks to all who braved the day to get out in our beautiful and wintry Oregon weather. |
