Waldo Mountain/Lake

September 26, 1999

It was a perfect day for a hike. Morning clouds over the Cascades disappeared as we drove up Salmon Creek Road to the trailhead. The mountain air was cold and invigorating as we headed east up the trail three miles to the lookout. The lakes below — Waldo, Round and Lower Eddeeleo — were visual September sapphires. The air was clear, the mountains close by. We continued on another 2.5 miles to Waldo Lake and basked on a sunny beach. Three of us ventured into the lake for swimming. After all this we retraced our steps on the Elbow Lake Trail to the Waldo Meadows Trail, and then walked through the meadows and forest to our van. Fit, capable, cohesive hikers included Lynette Boone, Maura Conlon, Allan Coons, Benton Elliott, Peter Graham, Connie Hanson, Dick Hildreth, Richard Lemon, Karen Myers and Marc Hansen, leader.
