September 25, 1999
We parked at the Hand Lake trailhead, walked past the shelter and then headed north up the
Hand Lake Trail along the lava.
I was hoping for summer-like weather but the sky was overcast and chilly.
Unlike last year none of us went swimming in one of the small lakes.
It was late September but incredibly on the north side of the mountain there was an abundance of
packed snow from the previous winter.
Above 5,500 ft. elevation where the snow had melted there were masses of colorful spring flowers
including yellow arnica, purple lupine and magenta Indian paintbrush.
I have never seen such a colorful display on Scott Mountain.
At the summit the temperature was 38° F. with a steady breeze, but the distant peaks were obscured
Enjoying the brisk fall weather were Susan Baker, Max Brown, Sandra Larsen, Ellen Leinbach,
Norma Lockyear, Tim Shinabarger, George Baitinger and leader Dave Predeek.
