Tahkenitch DunesMay 26, 1999It proved to be a wonderful day to do my favorite coastal hike — clear skies, warm temperatures and a light breeze. Five hikers left from Eugene and one (from Cottage Grove) met us at the trailhead. Along our route, we saw rhododendrons and other wild flowers in bloom. The only footprints we encountered were those of the local wildlife. The beach was ours with no one in sight. Here we stopped to enjoy our lunch to the sounds of crashing surf and pleasant conversations. Although I had cautioned about wet conditions, we found mostly dry trail, with only one small wet area that we could walk around. The bridge at Threemile Lake outlet was back in place and it was smooth going. We came back up through the woods and marveled at the new, large, shiny skunk cabbage leaves growing in the gullies amid a profusion of ferns and moss-covered trees. Hikers included non-members Benton Elliott and Daniele Delaby joining Obsidians Joe Scheibe, Jane Rodd-Marks, Art Skach and leader Sheila Ward. |
