Waldport to YachatsMay 20, 1999This was my first long hike after breaking my right ankle and it was a perfect day. We were 14 and started at Patterson State Park in Waldport with the wind at our backs. The tide was low at -1.6 feet just as we started out and that gave us a marvelous wide beach with sun and blue sky above and the Pacific in all its majesty. We had the whole beach to ourselves, just the birds and us, and we spread out on the wide space before us, crossing several good sized streams and many smaller ones, eating lunch on a log and being treated to rare ancient formations and tree-stumps exposed by the low tide, El Niño and winter storms. The great and lucky group was Mary Millman, Dixie Minkler, Bonnie Manheim, Ellie Maliner, Bill & Margaret Prentice, Neil Van Steenbergen, Sig Otto, Barb Elsen, Max Brown, Wendy Clarke, Nola Shurtleff, Gene Thaxton and me, Birgitte B. Williams, trip leader. |
