North Winberry Timer Sale TreesitMay 15, 1999The North Winberry Timber Sale and accompanying treesit is reached by taking the Lowell-Jasper road from Springfield almost to Lowell, but turning north on FS 6220, then right on FS 6245, which becomes FS 1802 up Winberry Creek. Continue on 1802 past Winberry Campground, FS 1824, FS 151, about one mile further to a spur road off to the left. Walk up this spur road to the center of a stand of Red Cedar and Western Hemlock (a few Douglas Firs) 800 years old. These trees are “jawdroppingly beautiful” — one measured 38.5 ft. in circumference! We visited with the treesitters (four young people) who came down from their platforms about 120 feet in the trees. After about two hours of visiting, together with lunch, we returned to Shirley’s van and returned home. The trip took us from 9:30 a.m. to just after 3:00 p.m. On the hike, led by Herm Fitz, were Obsidians Shirley Cameron, Marriner Orum and Sig Otto and non-member Robin Bundy. |
