Lewis & Clark (in the Rocky Mountains) & Montana

August 25-September 2, 1999

As a follow-up to our trip in April, Lewis & Clark at the Lower Columbia River, this trip was designed to cover the expedition’s route from the Great Falls of the Missouri to the Columbia Gorge. We followed as closely as possible their 1806 eastward route and then their 1805 westward journey. Our focus was primarily on Lewis & Clark points of interest, but we added other attractions. Highlights included: The Columbia Gorge, their overland route through Southeast Washington, Lewis & Clark Trail State Park, The Canoe Camp on the Clearwater, Lochsa Historical Ranger Station, Powell Campground on the Lochsa, deVoto Cedar Grove, Lolo Pass, Packers Meadow, Travelers Rest, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, the new Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, Giant Springs, all of the Great Falls, Fort Benton’s Waterfront, the Agricultural Museum of the Northern Great Plains, Charlie Russell Art Museum, a boat tour of Gates of the Mountains, Montana Historical Museum, the State Capital of Montana, tram tour in Helena called Last Chance Gulch Tour, Wheat Montana, Headwaters of the Missouri State Park, Three Forks, Virginia City and Alder Gulch, the Depot Museum in Dillon, Bannack ghost town, Bannack Pass, the Marcus Daly Mansion, the Spokane-Missoula Ice Age Floods, Bitterroot Valley, Wallace mining town in Idaho, Sacajewea State Park at the confluence of the Snake and Columbia Rivers, and the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center. In nine days driver Lee Cayser of Oregon Coachways piloted us 40 riders a total of 2,245 miles. Our thanks to Lee for a superb job. Ewart provided much information about geology, his home area around the Pomeroy region an many stories about events and places we passed. Ray focused on the Louisiana Purchase, the Expedition itself and its personnel and the impact the Corps of Discovery had on the development of the West. We experienced a very enjoyable and educational trip in great weather.
