Maxwell Butte

March 14, 1998

We left the SEHS parking lot in perfect weather: clear and cool. We arrived at the Santiam summit at 9:00 a.m., and were quickly on the trail; it felt good to have the pack on my back skiing up the trail. We skied north on the Pacific Crest Trail to the Santiam Lake junction, took a left and headed towards Maxwell Butte. There was two or three feet of new snow over the past two weeks so we got off the trail for a mile or two and skied above the trail. The weather remained warm and clear so we climbed on a knoll and oriented ourselves. We dropped down to the trail again and soon found ourselves at Burley Lake. By then it was noon so we decided to stop there and have a nice leisurely lunch and admire the view of Three Fingered Jack with its summit encased in ice. We turned around and skied down the old Skyline Trail directly to the Santiam Pass SnoPark. We arrived at the car safe and sound and had a safe drive back to town. Skiers were Dick Hildreth and leader Kevin McManigal.
