Fall Creek

October 17, 1998

Many signed up and most showed up so that 16 folk in three vehicles left Eugene at 8:30. We drove to Dolly Varden Campground, then shuttled a vehicle up to the trailhead at Road #1828. We hiked upstream in lightly overcast, occasionally sunny weather. The Fall Creek Valley has a distinctly “rain forest” quality in the Fall — lots of moss and ferns under a high canopy of big trees, along with many delicate vine maples, and the creek’s alternating quiet pools and white water. We had lunch at Bedrock Campground on some large rocks overlooking the creek. Joseph surprised us with a treat: he brought a stove and prepared a hot fruit drink that we all shared. After lunch we ascended for a time, getting a look at the valley. Then back down to the creek and then to the shuttle vehicle before 3:00 pm. Enjoying this pleasant Fall day were Obsidians Dan Bates, Max Brown, Janet Hall, Dick Hildreth, Rita Johnson, Elie Maliner, Sig Otto, Lucille Peterson, Margaret Prentice and Sharon Ritchie, along with non-members Joseph Kolete, Ellen Leinbach, Kathryn Madden and Rosemary Smith. Ed Lichtenstein: leader.
