Kentucky Falls/Whittaker CreekJune 3, 1998Four of us set off from Albertson’s parking lot at the civilized hour of 9:00 a.m.: leader Joyce Owen, member Hal Owen and non-members Bob Hookland and Petie Padden. We met members Jim & Melody Clarkson in Veneta. They followed in their car. We drove to the Kentucky Falls trailhead, passing abundant foxglove and iris along the road. We descended along Kentucky Creek through lush forest, past magnificent Upper Kentucky Falls, down to the Smith River. We ate lunch in the sunshine, while gazing at impressive Lower Kentucky Falls and North Fork Smith River Falls. The quantity of water going over these falls was astonishing. After we returned to the trailhead, the congenial group was eager to visit the Whittaker Creek Old Growth Trail, which starts from the Whittaker Creek campground. We enjoyed a pleasant stroll there, and returned to Eugene (or Veneta) by 4:00 p.m. |
