Weyerhaeuser Logging RoadFebruary 1, 1998First of February, first scheduled trip of 1998, and a first-rate experience, thanks to congenial companions and Mike’s fresh hot cinnamon rolls and coffee to top off the outing. For this trip, we met at the Thurston bus parking, 57th and Main, Springfield. Walking from there to 58th Street we soon turned on to the Weyerhaeuser logging road and proceeded from suburban sprawl to countryside and forest. With pauses at a pioneer graveyard, and at a viewpoint where wild turkeys are often spotted (but not today), and a quarry with great hunks of columnar basalt, we proceeded to Hills Creek Road and the Shirk house. Mike had loped ahead and was waiting with rolls and coffee. We made an easy shuttle back to Springfield with the afternoon still young. After a cloudy day with one light shower, the sun came out to shine on Bob Foster, Dixie Minkler, Bill & Margaret Prentice, Carol Stern and trip leaders Mike & Velma Shirk. |
