Mt. HoodJune 13-14, 1998The 1998 Obsidian Spring Alpine Climbing School, offered in cooperation with the Eugene Parks & Recreation River House, was attended by 16 students. All graduates of the Climbing School were invited to join the Obsidians for a climb of Mt. Hood. Five of those students were able to join us for our climb on June 13. We left Timberline Lodge at midnight and climbed the south side route under a bright, nearly full moon. By 8:00 am we were all on the summit. Strong winds forced us to keep our visit brief. Several climbers lost valuable equipment when the wind snatched items away. All climbers safely returned to the Lodge by early afternoon. Big thank-yous are owed to Sue Sullivan, Deb Carver, Larry Smith, John Pegg, Doug Nelson and all other Obsidian volunteers, and to Anne Blanchard and Roger Bailey at the River House, all of whom helped make the Climb School possible. Participants were: Chuck Areford, Deb Carver, Karl Kreigh, Dave Markey, Chris & Ken Miller, John Pegg, Dick Snyder, John Young and Brian Hoyland (leader). Also climbing, but not summitting, were Larry & Judy Smith. |
