September 18, 1997
The heavy rain in Eugene didn’t prevent six of us from taking off for the coast.
As predicted, we outran the rains midway and arrived at the trailhead in sunshine.
The view overlooking Cape Perpetua was beautiful and we continued inland into a dense sitka
and hemlock forest.
In September we shouldn’t expect to find wildflower blooms but there were a number of
fresh mushrooms to be seen.
Large elk tracks were found on the trail along Gwynn Creek but we saw no animals.
The trail had recently been cleared of a number of fallen trees.
The last mile had a new covering of gravel laid down by the Youth Corps.
Participants were non-members Sheila Ward and Lucy & Dick Rayle
and Obsidians Max Brown, Margaret Prentice and trip leader Bill Prentice.
