Crater LakeMarch 21, 1996Postponed from February 29, this trip was worth every one of the 364 miles round-trip travel by car: we left at 8:00 am, arrived at Rim Village a little after 12 noon, having stopped in Oakridge and Chemult for gas. Weather at first cloudless, with a deep blue sky and views from Mt. Thielsen to Mt. Shasta. Later a little hazy. Left at 3:30, stopped at the Big Mountain Cafe in Chemult for delicious, truly home-cooked beef stew and cream of tomato soup with giant, still-warm dinner rolls and a fairly large dinner salad, all for $3.95. These were huge portions. This cafe is an excellent ersatz for the Wheel Cafe, our traditional stop, which now closes at 3:00 pm already. Returned to Eugene at 8:15. This trip is suitable for all ski levels, as beginners can stay near the lodge and practice at the hill there. On this all-Obsidian trip were Dick & Elaine Barrar, and Helmut Plant, leader. |
