Tahkenitch Dunes

November 2, 1996

Great weather and enthusiastic hikers are the ingredients for a perfect autumn hike at the beach. Reached from Tahkenitch Campground, this walk takes you through shrubs and trees to the dunes. After a short walk on dunes you get to the shore. A new jog in the trail re-routes hikers around the Snowy plover nesting grounds. It was so pleasant on the beach, contrasted to last year’s hurricane-strength winds, that the group had lunch there instead of at Threemile Lake. After lunch the group returned through a magical forest carpeted in moss and ferns with toadstools and mushrooms scattered around. All we needed were some elves. Refreshments were enjoyed in the relaxed atmosphere of AlphaBits located in Mapleton. Hikers included Doris Allen, Elliot Aronin, Barbara Bruns, Kevin Clark, Wendy Clarke, Kurt Cyrus, Mary Ann Hastings, J. Scott Hovis, Corinne Hunt, Dot Leland, Anne McLucas, Mary Millman, Sig Otto, Bill Prentice, Lucille Peterson, Nola Shurtleff, Diane Wageman and Sylvia Harvey, leader.
