September 18, 1996
We were surprised on this cloudless September morning to find several inches of new snow at the
trailhead (6,200 ft.).
We then found most of the trail covered with four to eight or nine inches of crusty snow,
which slowed our pace.
Various animal tracks criss-crossed through the woods.
From the top, at 7,144 ft., Waldo Lake was spread out below us with the burned area at the north
end quite visible.
The long views from Mt. Hood to the Crater Lake area were magnificent.
On the way down we built a snowman to greet the next hikers.
People on the trip included two brand new hikers from Cottage Grove, Neil & Yaoko Van Horn,
former member Eleanor Wilkerson, and Obsidians Barb Elsen, Vi Johnson, Catherine Jones
and Margaret Wiese, leader.
