Matthieu Lakes

August 31, 1996

Eleven people left the SEHS parking lot at 8:00 am to travel the Old McKenzie Highway over the pass to the PCNST trailhead east of the Dee Wright Observatory. The morning was clear, bright and crisp-cool as we set off on an occasionally damp trail. Seven hikers continued from South Matthieu Lake up the nearby cinder cone to enjoy the panorama of the Oregon Cascades, visible to the north, including far-off Mt. Hood. All descended to North Matthieu Lake for lunch and were surprised by a serenade, in harmony, of a languidly sung &ldqup;Amazing Grace” which drifted across the lake from another group! On returning to the trailhead three membership forms were filled out. The group, consisting of Margee Wright, Corinne Hunt, Ralph Olive, Cherie Kramarae, Mary Ann Hastings, Rita Johnson, Mary Millman, John & Magic Garcia, Dick Bentsen and Mary Bentsen (trip leader) enjoyed blackberry cobbler served on the deck of the historic Log Cabin Inn at McKenzie Bridge.
