This hike to Substitute Point — six miles due west of the South Sister — was a delight
Our three-car caravan rendezvoused at the McKenzie Ranger Station for a last rest stop,
and then drove east up Foley Ridge for 12 miles to trailhead.
The weather was cool, the sky somewhat overcast.
The group was cohesive and fast paced. Incredibly, we encountered no mosquitoes!
The trail is a main connector to the PCNST.
Four-and-quarter miles in we arrived at the unsigned junction to the Substitute Point overlook
Some two hours from trailhead we were atop the point eating lunch and enjoying the panoramic view
of the Sisters, and Cascades to the north.
After a leisurely lunch our hardy band filtered back to trailhead and back to Eugene.
It had been a real hiker’s hike by Joyce Baker, Brigitte Cross, Kurt Cyrus,
Allen & Vicki Eckherdt, Dick Hildreth, Sachinloo Ilasaki, Karen Myers, Pete Shindee,
Rick Strom and leader Marc Hansen.
