McKenzie RiverJuly 28, 1996Thirteen miles of the most beautiful section of river, but this trip was a very different excursion from your ordinary paddle down the river. Cold, cold water and hot, hot air temperatures combined to form a seldom seen, ever-changing fog condition that was swirling, disappearing, reappearing — always shifting, and almost indescribable. For the raft captains, this made reading the water and navigation almost impossible at times. Several rafts became very intimate with several large rocks … resulting in several swimmers. I was one! At lunch time, we were provided a very first-class, all-you-care-to-eat buffet, including homemade pie, at the Holiday Farms resort. Good food, hot coffee and chocolate, great atmosphere and friendly people! There was a bruising mishap in the afternoon that could have been much worse, except for the skill, knowledge and concern exhibited by the crew of Oregon Whitewater. A class act company that we are fortunate to be associated with. A full day of high adventure for a very reasonable price. If the interest is there, we will do a stretch of some river again next year. McKenzie rafters were Meliiida Calkin, Jim Cooley, Richard Esterberg, David, Evan, Gordon & Jason Gallic, Faye Hensley, Donelda Higgins, Corinne, Hunt, Vi Johnson, Sandra Lewis, Helen Liguori,,Art Madox, Marty McGee, Glenn Meares, Eunice Mickel, Lloyd Mutinsky, Sarah Payne, Linda; Robert, Ruth & Sarah Saunders, Carrie Smith, David & Katy Titel, Anthony, Matt & Vernell Warner, Megan Wright and Gene Thaxton & Bea Fontana (leaders). |
