Castle Rock

April 3, 1996

The Ranger called to tell me that the road to Castle Rock was blocked between the saddle and the end of the road. No problem, since our hike began at the saddle. He also said to expect trees down along the trail due to winter storms. We counted ten places along the trail where trees were down (sometimes one tree fell across a zigzag section and blocked both sections). Twelve of the places were in the old-growth section that begins at the end of the road. We had little difficulty in going over or under the tees. The only serious problem was where two very large trees fell and wiped out the trail. Obsidian Margaret Wiese and I took clippers and did a lot of clearing of small branches and also threw large pieces off the trail. We were sorry two people who had signed up had to cancel for we could have used their help on this warm, sunny day!
