Sand MountainJanuary 7, 1995We met at the Ray Benson SnoPark at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 7. Hit the trail at 10:15 with a high overcast and light snow showers. Skied around Hayrick Butte and turned west towards Sand Mountain. We soon came up to the east side of Sand Mountain where we took off our skis and walked up the east side. The snow was firm enough to make it rather easy to walk up to the top. We soon found ourselves on top, eating our lunch at the fire lookout. The cloud cover rose, allowing us to see the base of Mt. Washington, the Three Sisters and Three Fingered Jack. We could also look down at Clear Lake and Fish Lake. The whites, grays and greens of a winter day made for a nice view. We put our skis back on, skied down the road, hit the trail and soon found ourselves back at the cars. Total time: five hours. On the trip were Andy McIver, Tom Johnson, Chris Steele and leader Kevin McManigal. |
