Indian Heaven Wilderness
September 22-24, 1995
This backpack trip through the Indian Heaven Wilderness in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest
followed the PCNST north to south.
We met at the Hood River County Court-house at 10 am on Friday, and then drove to the south end of
the Wilderness area where one vehicle was left.
From there we drove to the north trailhead and started the backpack trip.
Camp Friday night was at Wood Lake and the next night we stayed at Tombstone Lake.
Both camps were on the Pacific Crest Trail.
On the last day we took a side trip to Indian Race Track, the site of racing by Native Americans
as late as 1928.
The huckleberries were prime and there was much evidence of bears in the region, but we did not
see any of the animals.
We did see a weasel.
Participants included Beth & Grant Harman, Marilyn & Dori Wall, Emily Phillips,
Patti Jo Dornes and Dan Chamness, leader.
