Washburne Loop

March 26, 1995

The weather was superb for the Washburne Loop hike. The hike starts at the entrance to the Washburne Campground and follows China Creek approximately 1½ miles into the hills. Back-tracking to the Valley Trail, the hikers continued on past beaver territory following an early wagon road to Hwy. 101. Across the highway the Hobbit Trail goes to the beach. The lunch break was at the beach with a great view of Heceta Head (north side). The group headed north to the entrance of China Creek into the sea. Finally, the trail follows China Creek back into the campground. The Washburne estate was a gift from the family to the people of Oregon. The hike covered the general area of the estate. Hikers were Barbara Chinn, Maxine Hall, Masahio Higachi, Gary Marx, Mary Millman, Mel Mitchell, Sig Otto, Virginia Prouty, Joanne Vinton and Mary Ellen West, leader.
