Santiam Lakes Tour
March 12, 1994
Again this year leader Dot Leland was delighted to have sunny, warm weather, great snow and eight
enthusiastic companions to enjoy this favorite ski trip with her.
Thanks to David Crouch, Kristen Kaminski, Matthew King, Helen Liguori, Royal Murdock, Shelly Snow,
Kevin & Mary Jo Sterling.
Where else can you ski and see four lakes in eight miles?
The lakes are close to F.S. Road 2079, which takes off from the Corbett Sno-Park.
At the start there were some bare spots that slowed us down a bit, but the rest of the day the snow
was better than we expected.
We passed Link Lake and enjoyed lunch at an open area with Mt. Washington in full view.
We continued on and turned left into Torso Lake.
Its azure blue frozen surface sparkled in the sun.
We delighted in the quiet and beauty of the moment while several skied on the nearby slopes.
On the way back we took the road into lovely Hand Lake, where a coyote surprised us by walking
across the surface.
Next we made a loop up to Island Lake.
This was a challenge coming cross-country off the top through the woods to the road and back to the cars.
It was a fun day for all of us — skiing for different skill levels, variety of scenery, lakes,
streams, open vistas of Mt. Washington and Three Fingered Jack, and solitude (only two snowmobilers).
It’s a well-kept secret, but I’m willing to share it. Check it out!
