Gold Point

July 2, 1994

We left the SEHS parking lot at 8:30 under threatening skies. Made trailhead by 9:30. Two miles up we stopped at a rock outcrop for water and a snack. Just below this point on the trail we encountered a large tree which blocked the trail but we were able to scramble over it with little difficulty. We reached the top at noon and saw the remains of an old building and lookout tower. Our lunch spot gave us a beautiful view and by this time the clouds had burned off. We stopped at the rock outcrop again on the way down and enjoyed the spectacular view. We were back at the cars by 3:30 and after a stop at the Lowell General Store we arrived at SEHS by 4:30. The trail needs some major work on wind falls — about six trees crossed the trail. Other than the trail obstacles, the trip was uneventful and we were rewarded with beautiful vistas. Bonnie thinks this should be rated a “C” because there are several steep inclines. We had a super time and the day went very smoothly. My thanks to group participants Bonnie Manheim, Patsy McAdams, Jim Fritz, and Ellie & Ed Meservey. Bill Hemphill, leader.
