McKenzie River TrailJune 18, 1994The Grateful Dead concert at Autzen Stadium and a competing hike to Tire Mountain siphoned off most of the potential McKenzie River Trail hikers on this date. Hence, only three of us showed up for the outing. Our plan had been to hike from Trailbridge Dam to the Clear Lake source, but this was not possible with only one car. Hence, we had to settle for half a loaf and stopped at the “Big Blue Hole” where the river reemerges. There, we met a group of trail bikers who had stopped for lunch at that very scenic spot. While we also lunched there, other hikers passed, going in both directions. I was, personally, much interested in the profusion of coral lichens growing on the volcanic rock in that whole general area. I look forward to an early return when I can complete the route as originally planned. Our very select group for this most satisfying, if curtailed, hike consisted of Jim Fritz, Maura Conlon-McIvor and Vernon Barkhurst, leader. |
