Patjens Lakes

November 7, 1993

The Patjens Lakes loop hike was a pre-winter excursion with a bit of light, crunchy ice along the trail which seemed to make walking easier. There was not a hint of snow but the light ice on the lakes and the cool brisk air suggested winter was imminent. Patjens Lakes, named for a Sherman County sheep rancher who had a summer range near Mt. Washington at the turn of the century, are located near Hoodoo and Big Lake close to the Santiam Pass. The moderate trail makes a loop around the three lakes through forest and meadows. Mt. Washington, the Three Sisters and smaller peaks and buttes are visible along the six-mile trail. A good hike was enjoyed by Susan Baker, Barbara Chinn, Judy Forell, Donna Goles, Marty Hathaway, Jane Henderson, Rita Johnson, Helen Liguori, Anne Montgomery, Virginia Prouty, Sarah Sherwood and Mary Ellen West, Leader.
