Scott Mountain

September 26, 1993

Beginning at Scott Lake we hiked northeast towards Hand Lake where we stopped briefly to inspect the recent repair work on the forest shelter. Obsidians and Forest Service personnel cooperated in restoring the structure, which was built in the 1930s. From here we hiked northwest up the Hand Lake Trail to a point north of Scott Mountain. There is an old trail up the north side of the mountain which has not been maintained in many decades and is difficult to locate. After locating an old weathered signboard we followed slash marks on the trees. The tread of the steep, old trail is still visible iii some places. Midway up the mountain there is a pond in a beautiful sub-alpine setting. Nearby is an overlook with superb views of Mt. Washington and the lava beds to the north. We enjoyed the fine views at the summit while having lunch. We stopped at Tenas and Benson Lakes on the way down. Enjoying the warm autumn weather in the mountains were Rob Becker, Andrew Brtis, Diane Jeffcott, Rose Malone, Andrew & Maura Conlon McIvor, Ray Mikesell, Sharon Ritchie, Mary Jo Sterling, Sally Quigley and Dave Predeek (leader).
