Yapoah Crater

September 12, 1993

The weather was clear with frost along the trail but it gradually warmed as the day progressed. There were still a few patches of snow on the lava. Our first rest break was at South Matthieu Lake. Near Yapoah Crater we met a young man who intended to hike the full length of the PCNST this year from Mexico to Canada. He was walking 27 miles a day; and knew of only 12 others who were making the trip this year. We ate lunch on the rim of Yapoah Crater. It was very cool and windy. On the return hike we stopped at North Matthieu Lake where Kevin went swimming. The water was surprisingly warm. Our group included Doris Allen, Andrew Brtis, Kevin Clark, Barb Elsen, Richard Heinzkill, Rose Malone, Gary Marx, Myrna Peterson, Sally Quigley, Mel Zavolsky and leader Dave Predeek.
