Cape LookoutMay 16, 1993The promise was an easy hike, great scenery and a view of whales. We got two out of three. The Cape Lookout scenery is spectacular. The views north and south on the coast near Tillamook from the Cape are of Cape Kiwanda and Nestucca Spit. Wild flowers abound and the old growth Sitka spruce is dramatic. Two baby whales hovered very close to the Cape on a beautiful, warm, calm, sprung day. The trail was a different story. Because of severe winter storms and falling big tree damage, the middle half mile or so of the trail was MUD. Actually, it was muddy enough to be considered hazardous. The surprise is that the State Park people have not closed the trail. Surviving hikers were Barbara Chin, Maxine Hall, Jeanie Holmes, Vi Johnson, Mary Millman, Sig Otto, Paula Vehrs and leader Mary Ellen West. |
