Rooster RockMay 15, 1993Our small group (four) had excellent weather for this hike. A three-and-one-half mile up-hill walk brought us to a large, flat outcropping for our lunch break. Visibility and temperature were ideal for enjoying a fine view of the South Santiam Canyon and the Menagerie volcanic plugs. The arrival of a large Boy Scout troop was timed perfectly to persuade us to abandon the view and begin the return walk. Downhill we were entertained by Ben Elkus' cougar encounter stories and other highlights of nine summers of fire watch. Anne Montgomery and Norma Lockyear made meaningful input to the conversation and camaraderie. My sole contribution was to provide my arm as a scratching pack for an overfriendly Great Dane we met.
