Hardesty Mountain TrailMarch 27, 1993Since all of our group live in Springfield we decided to leave from the Smith house, this being three miles closer to the Hardesty Mountain Trail than South Eugene. We hit the trailhead at 7:40 a.m. The weather was cloudy but very pleasant for hiking. We saw four cow elk feeding in the clear-cut at the end of Crale Creek Road across the canyon from the Hardesty trail. The weather cleared some but not enough to see the Sisters, which can be seen clearly on a good day. There were patches of snow at the summit, where we had lunch for about 30 minutes. We could have rested longer but it was quite cold at that altitude (4,273 ft.). We returned to the trailhead at 1:30 p.m., thoroughly tired and happy. Next year when we do Hardesty we want to remember it as being as tough as it is. We never do! On Hardesty were Ruth Frederickson, Karla Smith and leaders Larry & Judy Smith. |
