Diamond PeakApril 24, 1993The 1993 climbing season began under cloudy skies and light snow. Eight climbers headed for the summit of Diamond Peak via the South-West Ridge. After several hours of plowing through knee- to waist-deep snow, it became obvious that in order to make the summit, snow conditions would have to improve on the upper ridges or we would be using flashlights to return. At about 1:15 p.m., we were still only half-way up the ridge. Weather conditions were deteriorating and with prospects of another storm that evening, we turned and headed back down. The return trip was even more difficult as step plunging in the concrete-like mush made you sink only deeper. Our group finally returned to the cars about 5:00 under rainy skies. Mountaineers included Jerry Crosby, Jamie Kiley, Kyle Merriam, Bill Reiswig, Tim Verhier, Mike Landes and leaders Jan & Rich Anselmo. |
