Fall Creek TrailJanuary 25, 1992This was intended to be a long, level, easy-going walk in the woods. The leader had arranged for clear weather with occasional sightings of the sun. Trail conditions were good until we crossed a broken footbridge on which was balanced a 30-inch diameter boulder. A few yards further on we came to a washed-out steep hillside with a large old tree across what had been the trail. A short conference of our party concluded that it would be smarter to turn back than to risk the precipitous plunge into icy Fall Creek way below! And so we passed our cars, with the leader stopping to finish her thermos of coffee, and walked on into the woods on the middle section of Fall Creek Trail. Just before we started up a steep area we watched an ouzel looking for lunch in the creek, and held a brief political debate. Discussions of food occupied the group on its return to the cars. Some much-needed rain began to fall when we arrived back at our starting point. Fall Creek hikers were Kevin Clarke, Sylvia Harvey, Bill Hemphill, Catia Juliana, Martha & Chuck Mitchell, Ellen Moore, Virginia Prouty, Sharon Ritchie and Susan Baker (leader). |
