Bechtel ShelterMarch 23, 1991Three cross-country skiers left S.E.H.S. parking lot at 9:10 a.m. Saturday, March 23 after waiting 10 minutes for someone who signed up but never showed up. Overcast blanketed the drive to Gold Lake Sno-Park. Occasional rain turned to snow at about 4000 feet. Temperature was above freezing so the highway was wet but snow-free all the way. The group started up the trail about 11:00 a.m. in light snow. Fresh snow covered the trail into Bechtel Shelter, but tracks from the day before made the going easy. On the early part of the trail skiers ahead of us broke trail. Our group followed the Midnight Lake trail past Bechtel Shelter for a half-mile or so before returning to the shelter for lunch at 12:45. All trails were packed when our group returned to the Sno-Park, where we arrived at 2:00. We arrived back at South Eugene about 3:30. Members of the group — Genie Currier, Bobbye Sorrels and leader Lawrence Ross — skied about 5½ miles on this easy outing. |
